Red foxes mate during winter, breeding mostly between February 8 to March 8 in western Montana. They will sometimes dig their own dens, but more often use dens made by other animals. Their gestation period is 51 to 53 days, and they'll give birth in late March to early April, with litter size averaging four to eight pups.
